Learning how to spin fleece into yarn
We just had our 2012 Alpaca Barnyard Open House on June 9th and it was a real hit! We really had a great turn out and met old & new friends, alpaca friends, neighbors, collegues, and all the kids really seemed to have a good time. There was great interest and curiosity about alpacas and we did our best to spend time in answering "those questions" about alpaca ownership just like we did (and still do!) since we met them ourselves. Alpacas...so many interesting facts...so much charisma....facinating!
For the event we thought we'd feature the two alpaca types with one of our yearling Huacayas; Morning Star Sapphire and our new little Suri girl Mia which we purchased at the MAPACA Jubilee back in April. The two girls were in a separate pen under the canopy for visitors to get an up close look and also have the opportunity to give them a snack which always goes over well with people of all ages.
We also had door prizes, helium balloons for all the kids (because it brings back childhood memories of kids with their bright cheerful balloons and I just love that!), hot dogs, chips and sodas & homemade fudge, an antique & collectible sale and our farm store was open with lot's of interesting alpaca items and all natural products. We also featured a local spinner and a fiber artist demonstrating how to spin alpaca into yarn on her spinning wheel and showing how to make felted soap. There was much interest in both arts.
As our first big open house we were so pleased at how many folks kept us on their calendar and made a point to attend. It really made us feel good and we hope everyone had such a good time you'll put us on your calendar again for our next event for the National Alpaca Farm Day coming up this fall!
