Magic with Maple Fudge
Cria season started with the first 2 babies being born on June 11. Both Magic and Diamond decided to deliver around 11 am on June 11. Dad had checked on the girls around 10:30 and said, nope nothing happening. About 15-20 mins later I took the "pet" dogs to the barn to play with the "guardians" and there was a baby! So I took the dogs back to the house and got Dad. When we got back to the barn, Dad checked the sex (I hadn't even thought to check before going back up to the house, I was too excited), it was a girl! He then carried the baby into the mommy and baby bonding pen and that is when I saw a baby sticking out of Diamond! Oh boy, now what? So he got Diamond to go into the feed isle and she delivered a boy!
Unfortunately, Diamond's Little Guy didn't make it. He never got the hang of nursing. I would offer him some milk, and he would refuse to eat. He was active and looking strong, so we thought he was doing okay. We feel horrible and wish we could do it over - such is the farming life. As a friend of mine said: "Livestock is wonderful but deadstock sucks."
On June 19, Jeannie delivered a wopping 20lb boy. His tendons in his leg are tight and should straighten up as he uses his legs. Right after he was born there was a two day heat wave, and he didn't seam to be doing well. Not again! With his tight tendons and the heat, we decided that we should supplement him. Now he is gaining weight and following his mommy. He is still having trouble walking because his front knees are very tight, so we will keep an eye on it.
On June 22, Rachelle gave us another boy! A handsome dark brown boy sired by Riley. My Pathfinders (Girl Guides) were coming to camp that night, so I decided to let them name him. They decided on "Junior Mint". Junior Mint is doing great and was playing with Maple Fudge (Magic's cria form June 11) by the end of the day.
On June 25, yet another boy was born! Rubi had a black boy, sired by Alto. Rubi has been bought, so we called her new owners right away and they came to see the new bundle of joy.
Wow what a couple of weeks! Next up are Stardust (currently at day 337) and Michelle (now at day 335). Plus the other 5 due before the end of the summer.
