Super dirty cria fiber.
This is the first year I have diligently skirted fiber. With only 15 or less animals for the past 15 years, it was not so daunting as last year when a friend gave me all of his clip from 35 animals. He did it again this year! ...plus 9 cria coats! Now, the stall in the barn is overwhelmed with bags of fiber. Well, most breeders have this problem I hear, but the industry is changing now. Alpaca fiber is being recognized as worth something! There is nothing new under the sun because the Incas knew the value of alpaca fiber, and now we are learning that again.
I started this endeavor with the cria fiber, as it is the most difficult to clean. I figure when I get through those, all the rest will be a piece of cake, more or less. Besides, all that garbage that I pull out while out on my front porch is blowing everywhere. The wild birds will have a good supply of nesting material. I should have all of the cria blankets done by fall.
I will get it all into carding batts during the winter. Nice thing to card fiber and watch old movies.
Nice place to skirt fiber!
Looking better after one wash and two skirtings
more skirting, and then carded
