Welcome to AuSable Valley Alpacas! We are a small family-owned alpaca farm and breeders of quality ARI registered huacayas. We are located in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mountains, 17 miles NE of Lake Placid, NY. Our home and farm sit high on a hill overlooking the beautiful AuSable River Valley.
All of our carefully selected foundation females are ribbon-winners, have produced award-winning offspring and/or are progeny of award-winning sires. As breeders, our focus is on striving to improve the fleece qualities, conformation, and temperaments of each successive generation. As you can see by our foundation herd, we have an affinity for color. We value the “uniqueness” in each of our animals and attempt to preserve their exceptional qualities & improve where needed through our breeding choices.
Our plan is to grow our herd to no more than 20 alpacas so that we may maintain daily contact with each animal and provide our customers personalized care. We prefer to be a very “hands-on” operation. Jay grew up here, in rural Jay (NY), caring for beef cattle and other livestock as part of his family’s farm. Julie grew up in suburban Baltimore handling and riding horses from a young age. We actively seek continuing ed opportunities by attending seminars and trainings, and are currently organizing a Neonatal Clinic with Dr LaRue Johnson in March 2007. Jay also offers shearing services in Northern New York and Vermont.
Another reason we choose to own alpacas is for the very appealing tax benefits, as well as the investment potential. If you are unfamiliar with these aspects of the business, we suggest contacting us or reading the AOBA pamphet "Financial Aspects of Alpaca Ownership" for further information.
