About Us
Bob & Louise Hazen moved to Santa Fe, NM from Florida in 2005. We established Blue Mesa Alpacas in 2006, with our herd quickly growing in size (now close to 60 alpacas in all, including both huacayas & suris).
In addition to our herd of alpacas, we also breed & train gaited Rocky Mountain horses (currently 9 in number). We recently added several Haflingers to that herd (Austrian mid-size draft horses), great for driving as well as riding (see our horse website www.bluemesaranch.com for more on our horses). Other animal life on the ranch includes 2 Great Pyrenees dogs (wonderful guardian dogs for the alpacas), 2 indoor cats, 2 barn cats, & 4 goldfish in an outdoor fish pond! Plus our latest addition: 2 cute little mini-mules, Romeo & Juliette.

Blue Mesa Alpacas is a family-run ranch, specializing in fine alpacas from elite suri & huacaya foundation blood lines. We are the largest breeding ranch in New Mexico, but we still maintain our focus on personalized attention. Our ranch is located just off of I-25, only a 15-minute drive from downtown Santa Fe, surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. Our ranch is committed to a high-quality breeding program, with an emphasis on improvements in conformation & fleece quality in every successive generation.
Our huacaya herdsires include males from 2 elite foundation bloodlines. From the well-known Legacy line (4Peruvian Legacy 6016, now deceased) we have Crescent Moon's Shockwave, a direct son & the sire of numerous award-winning offspring, along with 2 top-quality Shockwave sons. Sagebrush Beauregarde, distinguished by his exceptionally fine fiber, had his first crias arrive summer 2010. BlueMesa Aftershock, another fantastic Shockwave son with award-winning beautiful fiber plus fantastic presence, had his first crias hit the ground fall 2011, 2 girls, both with strong conformation & the same beautifully soft & very fine fiber that their sire displays. From the famous Caligula line (Pperuvian Caligula) we have full Peruvian BRCR's Peruvian Ricochet, a son of PCA Accoyo Goliath & grandson of Caligula. We also have a stunning silver grey herdsire, Misty Ridge's Silver Quest, another Caligula grandson who is producing color champions.
On the suri side, we have our light fawn full Peruvian herdsire Inca's Top Brass of the Inca & Uribe/Bruxo lines, with especially bright luster & an impressive show record. Top Brass has his first crias arrive in 2011, all showing evidence of having their sire's incredible lock & luster! Also with a fantastic pedigree including Ace, Able, & Rufino, & with great show results, is our up & coming dark fawn suri herdsire Pines Edge Breakaway.
