It is hard for me to believe that I got my first alpacas less than 3 years ago when I was GIVEN 6 males! My new-ish boyfriend, Tom, was with me and asked the woman giving them away if he could have two as well. When she said, "yes," I asked him where he was planning on keeping them and he said, "Your place!" Now, here we are, a short time later, yet it seems like a lifetime!
Tom has been my "herd manager" since that day. Our love and enjoyment of these wonderful creatures has led us down many paths. Soon after getting all male alpacas, I decided to get some females so that I could raise crias. I made mistakes at first, but with Tom's wise input, realized that we should "breed up". I took his advice and decided to get the best females I could afford and breed them to the best stud around. Fortunately that stud was not far away. His name is Snowmass XXXtreme and he was owned by Patsy and Larry Hauptrief of 1000 Oaks Alpacas. I began arranging to take my best females to be bred to him.
I currently own nearly 50 alpacas. All of them are "dreams come true" but the biggest dream of all is that I now own SNOWMASS XXXTREME!! I could not believe it when Patsy and Larry Hauptrief of 1000 Oaks Alpacas agreed to sell him to me. I was sure they were joking! Patsy and Larry have been my true mentors in the world of alpaca ownership since I met them and I have always admired them and their commitment to the alpaca "lifestyle". I am always delighted to meet "alpaca people". Alpaca people are always ready to share their knowledge and love of alpacas with you. Patsy and Larry are no exception. Along with XXXtreme came 35+ other alpacas. It is a huge comfort to know that Patsy and Larry are only a phone call (and a 30 minute drive) away.
In the meantime, I am loving and raising alpacas. When I got those first boys to their new home, I was able to coax sweet little Chippewa (who had the biggest, sweetest brown eyes) to eat grain out of my hand. It was "love at first bite". Now I have LOTS more alpacas to love!!
Tom and I love it when folks come to visit. If you are in the area, please give us a call and arrange a visit. In our opinion, the only thing cuter than an alpaca is a baby alpaca. That is, unless it is a youngster of the human variety interacting with a youngster of the alpaca variety. . .PLEASE COME VISIT!!
