After eleven years in the industry, Homestead Alpacas continues to proudly serve as shepherds to these wonderful creatures, maintaining a herd of 50 colorful Huacayas and Suris on 40 acres. We thrive on the opportunity to raise a living “product” in a healthy, country setting, share our knowledge and experience with others and provide each person who comes on the farm with a unique and memorable experience.
Our farm supports and promotes the development of a viable domestic alpaca textile industry from raw fiber to end product, as this is the intrinsic value of the alpaca. We are committed to raising alpacas of the best possible quality, exemplifying high standards related to their fiber, (density, fineness, yield and staple length) overall conformation (including ability to survive and live a healthy life, birth and breed easily, sustain a high reproductive rate, strong milk production and enhance positive traits in offspring) as well as the general disposition of each animal. We breed for sound, healthy, genetically strong cria with marketable fiber. Meeting the needs of our herd is a priority. At the Homestead, we are hands-on, live on the property for added safety, provide on-going training to staff and use clearly defined and consistent herd management techniques on a daily basis. We are a BVD free farm maintaining complete health and breeding records with full disclosure on each animal.
Homestead Alpacas values integrity and provides personal, professional service and dedicated support to our customers, conducting business using clear, time honored and ethical practices. We work hard to maintain a sustainable farm enterprise, diversifying into related services of Breeding, Boarding, Fiber Sales, Educational Farm Tours and Nationwide Transportation. We also offer a full on-line store of clothing, accessories and gifts, many of which emphasize the alpaca. This versatility brings added benefits to our customers.
Despite the assault on the small American family farm and the shrinking profit margins seen in the last decade as a result of corporate, international and large farm domination, we believe alpaca farming holds the potential of being a primary agriculture industry in the US, where a meaningful income can be made from the environmentally friendly alpaca and the natural fiber they produce. It is up to each of us to revitalize rural life and the “Alpaca Lifestyle” with modern animal husbandry, effective use of fiber and animal byproducts and appropriate promotion and marketing techniques.
