We have a 12 year old male huacaya that over the past few days has saliva dripping from his mouth constantly. Some times it is clear and sometimes foamy. Every thing else seem normal. He has a good appetite. We feed Evans pellets and orchard grass hay. Our pasture is snow covered, so there is no clover available. Any suggestions?

With a 12 year old alpaca I would always check the teeth first. A careful dental exam often requires sedation. something as simple a bit of stemmy hay can poke into the gumline and cause drooling. There are also some neurological diseases that can cause drooling (including rabies so be sure to wear gloves when performing the dental exam). The next thing to look for are causes of stress.

Just experienced this with one of our alpacas. Vet pinned the problem down to some foxtail seed heads that were in some hay we had purchased. The foxtail seed heads have some tiny barbs that stuck in the gum/lip juncture of the alpacas mouth and causes some sores. Changed hay, manually pulled out the painful tiny barbs and then did a daily irrigation (with antibiotic) on the tender areas. All other alpacas in the herd were not affected.
