2010 was our best year in business (5 years). As with most industries (like automobiles), prices were low for absolutely top quality offerings...easily the same girls 3 years ago were double what we sold them for.

We continued to buy and invest in higher and higher quality looking to produce even higher quality offspring (for show, for fleece, etc).
Making a living is work now (more than when I bought in -prices were high and now we're selling low)....It can be done.
I find myself in conversations every week with people who realize that the "deal" they bought really wasn't a deal for them....and now find themselfs with QUANTITY rather than QUALITY...and are looking for the next step. (don't get me wrong we have all made our share of misguided purchases....especially me).

Now is the time to buy (for whatever reason you are buying)...

Fleece animals (referring to males AND FEMALES) are available at VERY reasonable prices...know what you are buying or selling for that matter.

Pet Quality (better temperament) are getting clustered in the "dumping" and sometimes buyers are not getting what they are looking for...kind of a challenge to deal with the aftermath, when those looking for a few "nice Alpacas" (for variouos reasons) find themselves with a challenging animal.

Show Quality (Genetics, Marketing, Science behind product -histograms-, intrinsic value from farms selling, phenotype, show record etc)...those are the animals that are out there...but when prices are low (relatively) those that can afford it, will sit back with these offerings...and wait it out. Those that can't wait it out (like us and many others) put them out there... those are the gems to find!

2011 is a slow start (ok I am just frustrated with the winter blues but writing this is cathartic in a way)...but now is when we make assessment of inventory (alpacas), and tweak the plan to make our targets....selling animals, Breedings, etc and forge our strategy to do so...hope is NOT a strategy!

OK I'll shut up now though there is SO MUCH MORE TO CONTIBUTE in order to enhance sales...first time I ever wrote anything in a forum page... might be my last!

Sales went pretty well for us the last few years...yes, we did lower prices quite a bit though.
Our fiber boys/companions went really fast (over 20 of them) too. Seems like the people in our area love them...
We didn't stop breeding our girls either...

Besides dropped prices, I don't think the economy has hurt us too bad...

Sarah
