I know there has been talk recently of using frontline spray for treating mites but I can't find much information about it. Is this currently the most successful treatment for mites or are there other recommendations? Is the frontline used in combination with anything else?

Frontline Spray is the very best treatment we have found for Chorioptic mites. For more information read Dr. Ed's mite article in the '09 Herdsire issue of Alpacas Magazine. Unfortunately Frontline spray is currently unavailable and probably wont be back on the market til next year. We are working on compounding a substitute.

Unfortunately I don't have access to the alpaca magazine article. I did find online a recommendation of applying 1x every 3 weeks for 4 treatments. Would that be the current recommendation? Is this safe to use on pregnant alpacas at any stage of pregnancy?

Hi Dr. Ruthanne,
I was just reading the forum at Ope herd and came across the discussion about witch's brew. I have one pregnant alpaca with quite a case of mites that I have been treating with Mike Safely's recipe for witch's brew which contains DMSO...now I'm nervous since I read about the possibility of her aborting. She is due late this summer. I think I will make the next batch up according to the forum recipe without the DMSO. I also read about the reason Frontline has been unavailable (appalling!) and I am interested in your substitute as well as a reprint the article you referred to.

Hi,
I could only find frontline plus instead of just frontline. It has fipronil and S-methoprene in it. Is the S-methoprene harmful to alpacas?

I just saw on the shelves of Light Livestock Equip. at the AOBA show that they had frontline. I did not note if it was frontline plus or just frontline. Maybe give them a call?willow park farm wrote:
