promised land alpacas wrote:

Where are you checking the membranes?

We are checking the eye membranes. Although, since my original post it was determined the alpaca was severly dehydrated. So, even though she was deatly enemic, the blood viscosity was so concentrated that it gave a false reading on the membranes. That is where the confusion came in. Thank you for responding though. You were the only person in 2 months that even bothered! It is appreciated!

As alpaca farmers, we want to keep our herd in the best possible health. One area that is vital is to ensure the alpaca are not anemic. I do not know how other regions are instructed, but in our region we have always been advised to check the membranes. Bright Pink = no anemia, Light - Moderately Pink = borderline, White = GET TO THE VET NOW!!!! My question is, what do you do when an alpaca has bright pink membranes but blood tests reveal severe anemia? How do we avoid this situation?
