After visiting and showing at a couple of shows this spring it became apparent that all of the cria born last summer and into the fall on our farm are much smaller than the animals from other farms. Their parents, that were purchased from other farms, are large and strong. They were getting a suppliment but following the show we switched to Mazura based on the recommendation of Dr. Norm Evans. What is the most likely cause of an entire group of animals not to grow to the normal size.? In reading Dr. Evans book he indicates that too much iron could be a cause of this. How would I test for this?
Thanks for your help

Steve, You could have bloodwork done on them to find out if it's too much iron, thyroid issues, vitamin or mineral deficiencies, etc. Another thought would be set up a creep feeder if you don't already have one.

What do you do if you know that your alpacas are getting lots of iron? Our water is so full of iron it turns everything orange.

You might want to call Ohio Pure Water Company (http://www.ohiopurewater.com) and talk to Charlie. They sell very reasonably priced water filter systems that can clean up your water. I recently purchased a system off of them to remove iron and my alpacas have doubled the amount of water they are drinking. Their systems are about 1/3 the price of name brand water filters.
