Topic "Water" a message from thorpetw

All our alpaca's fleece is tearing apart. We traced it to our well water. Lab tests showed Sulfates at 241 ppm, Nitrates at 37 ppm. According to the person we spoke with at the lab, this is tying up the alpaca’s ability to take on the minerals they need. We met with a man from Culligan and were told that we could get a water softening system that would remove the sulfates and nitrates but replace them with sodium at a 1:1 ratio. Will the sodium now create a problem? For alpacas, how much is too much? Sodium currently in the water tested at 25ppm.
As a temporary measure, we switched the alpacas to filtered rainwater from our rainwater collection system. Now we are trying to decide by using the hay test results, grain labels, and very rusty High School science, the mineral supplements we should buy. Should we use different minerals depending upon which water we are using? What do you recommend? Thank you!!!

We have a gal that is due around 04-10-12 she has had a seizure lasting approximately 30 seconds to a minute long every day since Monday usually in the morning time around 9 or 10 last night was in the afternoon around 5 or so. Just the one a day that we have seen of course she may be having more at night or late evenings. We started her on Thiamine on Monday and have seen no results. Still eating/drinking, no fever and once the seizure has subsided and she can gather her self no further problems. Could this be pregnancy related? This is not her first cria and she is approximately 6 years old. I would think maybe too young for any type of mass to be causing it.

Topic "Auction needs major improvement" a message from joe

Hi bweber,

We did recently increase the number of auctions that each membership plan is allowed to run (Plus=5, Std=10, Pro=20 at a time), however we have not made them unlimited. This change was part of a system-wide update that included many other features, such as creating a new auctions search to allow you to find the type of animals you're interested in, so that you don't have to go through all of the listings. You can also sort by price, bids, etc. We also put the auctions search in front of the traditional search that includes all the free listings. This gives our paying members premium exposure because all alpaca search traffic comes through the auctions first.

So while the number of auctions has increased, so have the other benefits, most notably, an increase in traffic.

Another benefit of allowing more auction listings, is that it enables farms to run their own mini online auctions that they can then promote themselves. So a Professional member, for example, can run 20 lots, schedule them to end at the same date and time, and then do their own email blast or other advertising to promote the event.

I hope this helps to explain things.

Joe Preston
Openherd.com

Topic "New search options" a message from joe

As you may have seen, we improved our auctions with a new search feature and are testing out a new search format that is still powerful but a lot less "busy" and click-heavy. Once we've worked out the kinks with that we plan to update the standard search to incorporate that new format and will likely add these search features at that time.

One thing you can use to filter out the animals you're interested in is to do the specific color or state searches and then click the orange plus icon to the left. This saves it to "My Pen" which is like a favorites list. Then click the gate icon at the very top right of the page to view these saved animals. It's a handy way to compare and watch a bunch of different animals.

Thanks for your input and ideas and we'll keep a note of those for our next revision. We also really appreciate your encouragement and kind words. Thanks for using Openherd!

Joe Preston
Openherd.com

We have had our local grain feeder produce both a pellet feed and a free-choice mineral. The pellets were produced using simillar ingredients to Mazuri and NuZu feeds. They also contain many of the same mineral levels, but are more tailored to what our alpacas need. We had trouble feeding the Mazuri because of the pellet size. Many of our girls choked on it. The mineral was based off of the Stillwater Mineral recipe, but again, is fitted to what we need

Katy & Delaney Holland
Alpacas of Holland Acres
Olivia, MN

I love the Mazuri supplements and feel that the full range of products they offer pretty much cover most nutritional requirements for the alpacas. The result on our farm, after consistent use for 8 years, is healthy robust animals and hardly ever a problem. I'm definitely in favor of feeding alpacas wisely for good healthy production and well nourished FLEECE!

Now, for a hint on reducing the cost: most feed stores will give you a discount or price break if you buy in bulk.
I think the thing you fail to recognise is that many people do not have nor need a one time upload of up to 50 items. They are probably already a free member and have their animals for sale already listed. They may not ever have 50 items that need to be uploaded at once. They may not ever want to list their animals in this auction, as it cheapens the market.

Perhaps you might think about a cafeteria plan, where members can choose features they want, at levels they want or need. I have my own website, have had for years. I like it the way it is. If you had better choices of skins, I might consider hosting on Openherd. The store with shopping cart is a good feature, I would want that, for sure. Featuring animals/items is also nice, but everything else, I really don't care about. So asking me to pay for features I don't want only makes me go with the free membership rather than $200 per year.

Hello,
I would think the decision would come once the male in question is fully mature. By this time, you will probably know if the male is one you would like to use for breeding. If not, gelding can be done as soon as his 'parts' are fully developed. Gelding should be done during cooler months so he won't be bugged by flies, which can cause infections, while recovering. Your vet is the only one that can really tell you if the male is ready or not. Gelding is really up to you. If the male is a little too dominate for you, gelding would probably help. But the main decision, is based upon breeding or not.

Katy and Delaney Holland
Alpacas of Holland Acres
Olivia, MN

Topic "membership plans" a message from joe

Hi whitelotus,

Thanks for your interest in an upgraded Openherd membership. The Plus membership has always been $199 and didn't include auctions until our recent plan updates in mid-December, when we added auctions to the Plus membership. So this was just a value-add for Plus members but didn't affect the price.

Plus membership includes a complete hosted farm website (separate from Openherd),where all your sales lists are automatically synced, you can add/edit your own web pages, navigation, have a blog, upload articles and includes an online store with a shopping cart and PayPal checkout. You are also able to feature alpacas/products on all your sales pages, your farm is included in the featured farms on Openherd's home page, and you also get a free one-time upload of up to 50 animals/products. All of these are included in the $199 plan.

Hopefully these benefits, aside from the auctions, will be worth it for you but we understand that some members don't need all of the included features. One thing to keep in mind with the auctions is that they're not just a sales format but they also offer premium exposure/advertising on Openherd, since they are now front and center to our alpaca search (all search traffic goes to the auctions search page first). So running auctions doesn't have to be with a mind for getting bids but simply for the exposure it gives. The sale can still happen the traditional way.

I hope this helps.

Joe Preston
Openherd.com

In the cement, we have grate marks in it that gradually slope towards the doors (this allows the urine and spilled water to head outside). The cement makes any type of clean up a breeze.
