Beginnings of Thousand Oaks Alpacas

Thousand Oaks Alpacas began out of Patsy’s interest in Alpacas which started from an Alpaca article she read in the mid 90’s. Larry’s interest in Alpacas began after leaving the fast-paced business world and the desire for country living. Larry and Patsy now live on her home place, located just northwest of Johnson City. Now Patsy has her Alpacas, and Larry is living his retirement years on the Alpaca ranch. They reside in Patsy’s childhood home built by her dad over 60 years ago. She has come full circle, from the ranch as a child, to the city chasing the career path for Larry and raising two children, and now back to her roots of ranch living. This decision has brought them joy that only country living offers, while having fun observing their Alpacas each day.

Alpacas are peaceful and yet very curious animals by nature. They move about gracefully in the pasture(s), sometimes playing with one another, having fun of their own. They only require approximately one pound of feed per day as a supplement to grass. Hence, the cost of feed is minimal. As many as 10 Alpacas may reside on a single acre.

The Alpaca fleece is softer to the touch, lighter in weight than wool, and absent the itchy guard hairs that make wool aggravating to the skin. Due to the fact that Alpacas produce fleece utilized in clothing, the land in which they reside usually qualifies for an agriculture exemption. If you are interested in fiber arts, owning Alpacas is a great source of obtaining fleece.

From an investment standpoint, owning Alpacas can be very rewarding. Returns on investment are known to be in excess of 50% ROI, depending on your level of investment and personal involvement. Of course, as with any investment, return on investment varies from individual to individual.
