In 2009 when Phoenix was nearing three years of age, I was having trouble getting him started breeding. I would put him in a breeding pen with a girl I wanted him him to breed with and he just didn't seem interested. So one day after a disappointing breeding effort, on sort of a whim, I let Phoenix into the south girl pen which was full of about 25 girls. He didn't have any more trouble breeding after that. Phoenix found Prada and Opal was the result.
Service Sire:
Xanadu P. Andiamo
| AOA# 1166231 | white
|
Presidio son Xanadu P. Andiamo is the perfect combination of Allianza, Accoyo and Sollocata hertige with the likes of Caligula, Hemingway and Pachacuti in his background. These lines compliment each other exceptionally resulting in a dense, uniform fleece with impressive staple architecture and a soft handle.
Description
Opal of ALPINERANCH is the daughter of our Phoenix, son of Snowmass Quechua.
Snowmass Quechua is the 2002 Futurity White Color Champion and the 2006 and 2007 Futurity Light Herdsire of the Year. Quechua is half maternal brother to Snowmass Invincible who sold at auction for $580,000 and sire of Snowmass Matrix who sold at auction for the all time record price of $675,000.
Opal's 2011 histogram was 19.0/4.0/21.0/2.0. Three years later, Opal's 2014 histogram, bred and nursing, was 19.4/4.0/20.6/1.8.
And here is why you want Opal as an addition to your breeding operation... it's all about what she can produce for you. Opal's 2015 daughter Anastasia (pictured above/right), her 2nd fleece: 16.1/3.4/21.0/0.5.
Opal is a workhorse producer, just like her dam, Prada.
Some folks think it is okay to breed your Alpaca girls in year two, and usually the results are okay. Over the years I have been breeding Alpacas since 2004, I have found breeding your ladies in year three yields much better results. This way your new production female has a longer time to mature, both physically and mentally and is better prepared to care for her future offspring. It costs an extra year in development, but in the long run it benefits all (the production female, the future cria and the owner/breeder).
In Opal’s case with a DOB of 8/12/10, she was first bred in the summer of 2013 and had her first baby in 2014. A proven mom, Opal has had 3 superior offspring for Alpine Ranch, all were in excellent health and had good growth rates. Opal had a boy from Powder (2014), a little girl from AL (2015) and a boy from Iceman (2016). (Due to some non-Alpaca circumstances, no Alpacas at Alpine Ranch were bred in 2016, so Opal is coming off a breeding break 2016-2017 and her health and body conditioning are excellent.)
Knowing the results from Opal’s past offspring, our Caligula grandson Andy looks to be Opal’s puzzle piece, this should be Opal’s best offspring yet. She was bred on July 15th and again on July 25th for a mid-June 2018 birth.
Due to all of Opal’s outstanding qualities, I’d like to get $3000 for her at this age. She’s strong and in good shape, so as her breeding manager I would conservatively count on a minimum of five more births out of Opal before she retires. With proper management, six more healthy babies would certainly be within the realm of possibility, as ladies in Opal's direct line have done it before.
For October of 2017, I will offer Opal for a $1,000 cash sale. With a down payment of $300, I would also accept payments of $125 each month for 6 months. Free delivery within 100 miles of Elizabeth, Colorado, $1.50 per loaded mile thereafter.
