This lively seminar taught by animal scientist Steve Hull PhD. will educate new and established owners. It covers a variety of issues such as pasture management/fertilization, ruminant nutrition, parasite prevention/control, cria/adult vaccinations, breeding/birthing/weaning situations and many other subjects relating to the latest alpaca husbandry perspectives.


Advanced Alpaca Techniques

This seminar is gearded toward the alpaca owner that is already comforatable with the basics and is ready for advanced training on alpaca development, and adult reproductive physiology and anatomy. You will learn about state-of-the-art breeding practices and issues associated with birthing, weaning and re-breeding.

Our Mid Summer Sale features breeding quality alpacas from six farms. Great selection of bred and open females and breeding males. Special low prices on select alpacas. Door prizes, including breedings to our white male color champion, Snowshoe Aristides.

Come to this seminar and learn the key genetic concepts to boost your breeding program and improve your outcomes. Learn how to choose breedings to increase the odds of making the colors you desire, and reduce the risk of making colors or patterns you want to avoid. You’ll find out how to research your herd and your outside breedings to accelerate the improvement in your fleeces, and minimize the risk of inherited diseases. Understanding how camelids were domesticated, and how they are raised today in the Andes, to better understand how we should be caring for them in the US.

Come experience what life is like on Americas largest alpaca farm!

Are you a new alpaca breeder or interested in becoming one? If so our "Alpaca Experience" weekend is the perfect hands-on learning opportunity for you! Your weekend includes a custom designed learning experience, two nights in a private guest house right on the farm property, and a hearty lunch both days.

The weekend could include helping feed and care for 1,600 alpacas of all ages, helping with breedings, halter training, trimming of teeth and toes, a lesson on evaluating alpaca fleece and conformation, or how to succesfully buy, market and sell alpacas. With over 600 cria born a year you may even assist with a birth or two!

The seminar is offered year round on a mutually agreed upon weekend.

This in-depth, VERY hands-on seminar will teach you the basic skills needed to shear alpacas and includes two days of intense classroom and hands-on training, including actual shearing time both days for all participants.

Also included is free housing for all out of town participants, full breakfast and lunch both days, a custom shearing DVD and manual, and a $500 credit voucher good toward the purchase of a breeding or animal at Magical Farms.

This seminar will cover...

Shearing Equipment: The pros and cons of various shearing machines (Heiniger, Oster, Premier), Blade selection, Oils, Ropes etc.

Set-up Area: Lighting, Electric Needs, Surface Area, Animal Flow, Gates, Catch Pens.

Animal Handling: Safely catching and restraining your animals, ways to minimize alpaca (and human!) stress.

Shearing: Shearing patterns, how to follow the contour of the animals to get the best cut, different styles of cuts, fleece handling as it comes off the animal.

Plenty of time is allowed for all questions that come up.

Only 12 participants will be registered in each class to promote an intimate learning environment.

Please note: This seminar is not part of our free seminar series.

This seminar is for those that have at least one season of shearing experience already, or have taken Matt's "Shearing 101" seminar previously. It is not for the beginner shearer. It includes hands-on shearing time for all participants.

Matt will discuss how to make the most efficient strokes to lessen the animal's time in the ropes, grinding techniques, rebuilding clippers,
9-tooth combs, exercises and clothing for the shearer, and tips and advice on running your own shearing business.

Ample time will be allowed for questions. Lunch is included. All participants will receive a $300. credit voucher good towards the purchase of an animal or breeding at Magical Farms.
