2nd Saturday Spin-In @ Hoosier Heartland Alpacas

Other

Each month on the 2nd Saturday we invite you to bring your spinning wheels or drop spindles and sit in our barn alongside our herd of suri alpacas and spin. We start at 10am and end at 2pm. We will spin for a couple of hours, take a short food break and then spin some more. You're welcome to join us as we spin some wonderful yarns and spin some wonderful new friendships each month. Please bring a snack to share, drinks are provided. It is a wonderful time. We do have drop spindles and spinning fiber available for new spinners. I have been busy carding fiber this week and have Medium Brown from Boots, Black from Irv, White from Maggie and Medium Fawn from Aztec. These will be available on Saturday along with some really neat Handcrafted all natural hardwood drop spindles.

If you do not spin and have no interest, join us anyway and bring your yarn patterns or projects or even your cross stitch. We have yarns and you will have a great time.

Some of our ladies and gents are pretty professional and will also bring show and tell for us all to see and further inspire our inner fiber passion!

If it gets too cold in the barn, we will go inside the house (we do have a patio heater but have not had to use it yet so not sure how warm it will keep it, please dress appropriately). Also, if there is bad, snowy or icy weather, we will NOT spin.........stay home where it is safe on those Saturdays.

Fee: Free unless you purchase a drop spindle or fiber.

New Breeder Workshop

Seminar/Education

This is a weekend that will help you decide if the alpaca business meets your needs and expectations. For many people in the alpaca industry, this is their first attempt at raising livestock, starting their own business, or doing something that is really "out of the box". It is a financial and time commitment that needs careful consideration and lots of information in order to make educated decisions. We will spend two days looking into the alpaca business... from financial aspects to taking care of alpacas on a daily basis.

Saturday: Overview of the alpaca business, facility and equipment recommendations, financial considerations, evaluating fiber and conformation, business opportunities within the alpaca industry. Our workshop area allows for comfortable small group discussions for the morning session. The afternoon will be spent in the barn evaluating alpacas.

Sunday: Alpacas are easy to care for, but they do require care. Sunday will be spent talking about pasture maintenance, husbandry protocols, nutrition, and daily care. Theory will be combined with hands-on practice with toe nail trimming, administering oral medication and handling for vet care. This is the day to help you feel comfortable in the routine care and handling of alpacas.

We understand the apprehension and concerns that face many new prospective owners and take care to represent the industry, ownership responsibilities, and alpaca "realities" in a straightforward manner. We love the business and want others to have the same positive experience we have enjoyed.

TIME: 10:00am-4:00pm
COST: $50 for each day or $75 for both days. Two people from one farm (or future farm!) can attend both days for $125
INCLUDED: Lunch, workshop notebook, refreshments

Registration is limited to insure individual attention. Contact us for registration details.

2012 LEARN to SHEAR the Easy Way!

Seminar/Education

This 1 day class is a very involved day, 9 a.m. till we are finished, limited to 4 participants, so all can get the personalized time I believe is needed for the participants to get the hands on attention that creates a safe and calm environment. Shearing can be taught by the table method or on the ground stretch method, only one will be covered per day. I attempt to get each person to shear 1 alpaca each, more will be available if class moves along. Suri and Huacaya are available to learn on but I am limited in Suri so 1 class will be held for Suri. The cost is $275 which includes a copy of my "Comprehensive Guide to Shearing the Alpaca" it covers shearing a alpaca from beginning to end and then some. Also included a pair of gloves, apron and lunch from one of the local establishments we have great food available. I cover all equipment info and a wide variety of the tricks I have learned to make your shearing day an easy day.

For now I will not set which day for Suri to see if I can accommodate more people I am always game on setting up another date for Suri earlier in the season even on a weekday if available.

Due to the limited space a refundable deposit $100 is required to hold a spot. Upon receipt of deposit I will send the copy of my manual. If you cannot attend your scheduled class you may reschedule for a class in the same season. If this cannot be achieved a refund of $65 will be mailed immediately.

Thank you for showing interest in shearing, it is all about the fleece and how much usable fleece is harvested from these cool creatures hope you can join me in my adventure, feel free to call or email with any other questions.

Fee: $275 per participant

Open Alpaca Barn

Other

EasyGo Farm is co-hosting the annual Open Barn at Alpacas of Oregon.
In the midst of Washington County's wine country, the farm is conveniently located to provide a pleasant break from the annual winery tours.

You're invited to meet the alpaca babies and their mothers.
Check out the proud papas - our alpaca herdsires.
Get nose to nose with less expensive fiber boys - alpacas for fiber artists, 4-H, companions, or pasture ornaments and lawn mowers.

There will be many alpacas for sale - males and females, colored and white, breeding stock or fiber production animals - at affordable prices.

Talk with long-time breeders about the alpaca and fiber business and about starting your own farm. If you're curious about fleece producing animals - sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas - we've raised them all and love to talk about them.

Watch as fleece is prepared for spinning, then handspun into beautiful yarn. Bring your spindle or wheel - or borrow ours - and give it a try for yourself.

In addition, the Barn Store is stocked luxurious alpaca products: fleece and roving for handspinners, yarn for knitters, sweaters, scarves, socks, and more, many handcrafted.

We'll be open from 10:00 till 4:00, Saturday and Sunday.
