About Oak Haven Alpacas, LLC
Deep in the woods of Newaygo County, Michigan, surrounded by the Manistee National Forest is the home of Oak Haven Alpacas, LLC. Owning an alpaca farm was a long time dream come true. Now that we are in the business, I wonder why it took us so long.
Oak Haven Alpacas, LLC, is a family farm. We all love nature and have always been fond of animals. This is a venture that we have all taken part in, and despite the difficult decisions along the way, it has brought us closer as a family. Justin has done the most research in blood lines and animal confirmation. He is our medical lead person, since he is a registered nurse and has a medical background. He also is a great builder/handyman, having built a chute for our alpacas, added vents to our cargo trailer and started on plans to build another barn. Cara does the day to day feedings, the poop scooping, and is most interested in the fiber. She has learned how to spin the fiber into yarn and both Cara and Justin have taken up knitting. The kids love going to the barn to help feed the alpacas. They love showing the alpacas to their friends and assisting with farm visits. Though they have been most excited that they could finally get a cat, and since the cat needs a friend, we now have two barn cats.
Our farm started in 2007 with the purchase of two bred females and a gelded male. Not too long after that purchase we were itching to add to our herd. The next addition included another bred female, two maiden females and a Jr. herdsire. Justin took the lead in researching blood lines with the goal of purchasing the best females we could afford. We also wanted to make sure we have a variety of genetics on our farm, and a variety of colors. Then with careful breeding to ideal males we can improve the quality of the alpacas and the wonderful fiber they produce.
