    Description

X Man’s X Marks the Spot of BFAF

    (“Spot”)

X Man’s X Marks the Spot of BFAF is the living embodiment of a long-held appaloosa dream at Blackberry Fields Alpacas.

Spot was born with a single, perfectly placed black spot on her neck — quite literally earning her name. As a juvenile, she initially showed as solid, but patience paid off. In 2025, her spots came in decisively, and she entered the ring as an appaloosa, where she earned 1st Place in both Halter and Walking Fleece as a Multicolor Yearling — a defining moment that confirmed both her genetic promise and the vision behind her creation.

Spot has already built an impressive and well-rounded show record across fleece and halter competition, including:

1st Place – California Classic, Halter (Full Fleece Huacaya Multicolor Female Yearling – Small Breeder)
1st Place – Gold Country Gathering, Halter (Full Fleece Huacaya Multicolor Female Yearling)
1st Place – Gold Country Gathering, Walking Fleece (Huacaya Multicolor Yearling)
Top 4 Placements at Golden West Alpaca Expo and Wild West Alpaca Show as a competitive juvenile

Her success reflects not only her color transformation, but her correctness, fleece quality, and overall balance.

Spot is the result of a very intentional and deeply personal breeding. At the very first alpaca show attended by her breeder — long before Blackberry Fields Alpacas truly began — a banner advertising auction herdsires caught the eye, featuring Rare Gem X-Man. It was love at first sight and the instant realization: this was the direction — breeding appaloosas.

That moment turned into action when X-Man was successfully purchased at auction… followed quickly by the realization that there was no registered female to breed him to. The search led to RR Gretel, a standout female with appaloosa genetics through her dam and a cria at side, Eros. With Gretel’s appaloosa heritage, hopes were high — and Spot delivered.

Backing up her phenotype, Spot’s 2024 EPDs place her solidly among the top animals in the national herd, including:

Top 10% for %M (Percent Medullation)

Top 25% for SDAFD (Secondary Density Adjusted Fiber Diameter) and MC (Micron Curvature)

These numbers reinforce her value as a breeding female, combining eye-catching appaloosa expression with fleece traits that matter for long-term program success.

Spot’s appaloosa wins represent more than show-ring accolades — they mark the fulfillment of a dream sparked at that very first alpaca show. She stands as proof that vision, patience, and thoughtful breeding truly pay off.

She is the heart of the Blackberry Fields appaloosa program — and the reason the dream keeps growing.
