Details
Wildfire has already won 8 contest divisions - a silky jet black llama, she did very well at the Cascade. She was Grand Champion at 7 months in halter and Reserve in walking fleece. Her fiber is lustrous with an incredible sheen. In Central Oregon Llama Association's 2022 show, she won Grand Champion in walking fleece and has a whole table of ribbons from just 2 shows!
She is destined to continue in her sweep of contests and her next show is TBD!
We are undecided as to breeding her, yet. She will be 3 in August, which would be about the right age, but our breeding season in Montana is very short. The gestation time, if you weren't aware of this, is a year minus 2 weeks. Llamas though, like humans, can have their babies sooner or later than their due dates, by as long as two to three weeks! Waiting until she is past 3 years old puts us into a time where next year, her offspring would be born right before September, a month that frequently comes with snow. The birth would be safe, but that only gives a little cria a month to grow the very thick fleece needed to withstand the harsh Montana winters.
We may instead shake the hay out of her fleece from the winter and allow that lustrous sheen to once again be seen and enter her in the "walking fleece" category at the Glacier Championship Llama Show - it would be very soon, so we will have to let you know if she is heading back to retain her crown!
