The Secret to Preserving Your Sinfully Soft Angora Yarns
Whew — what a season it’s been! Fall is in full swing, and I’ve been hopping from one rabbit show to the next. It’s the perfect time to show off our lovely, fully-furred critters, and next weekend is OFFF! Boy howdy, am I busy doing the final touches on the two classes I’ll be teaching there.
And if that weren’t enough excitement, I just received a brand new batch of yarn from The Good Shepherd Mill! Every skein is silky, soft, and waiting to be labeled and showcased at OFFF. Meanwhile, Betty has been busy shipping us bags of her prime Angora wool — much of which will be re-sent to the mill for another batch of luscious lace yarn. She’s also sent several longer shearings that are perfect treasures for handspinners.
But amid all this beautiful chaos, I had to pause and share a little golden tip that has quickly become my new favorite thing:
My New Go-To for Packaging Angora: Acid-Free Tissue Paper
Yes, I know — acid-free tissue paper costs a bit more than the standard kind you find at your local market or in most packaging aisles. But trust me, the extra cost is well worth it when it comes to preserving the beauty, texture, and lifespan of your exquisite Angora yarns and garments.
Why? Because ordinary tissue paper contains acids that can break down natural fibers over time, leaving them dull, brittle, or even discolored. Acid-free tissue paper, on the other hand, is pH-neutral — meaning it won’t react with your fibers or dyes.
The Same Secret Used by Museums
There’s a reason historians and museums around the world use acid-free tissue paper to wrap and store valuable textiles, heirlooms, and artifacts. It’s all about preservation — keeping fabrics as vibrant and strong as the day they were created.
When we use acid-free tissue for our Angora, we’re not just packaging — we’re protecting art. Each skein and garment represents hours of care, craftsmanship, and love, and they deserve nothing less than museum-quality treatment.
So whether you’re shipping yarns to customers, storing your handknits, or setting aside a few skeins for your personal collection, consider giving them this little extra layer of care.
Your future self — and your beautiful Angoras — will thank you.
Well gotta run! The bunnies are being groomed, the yarns are being labeled, and the fluff is ready to fly — OFFF here we come!
