The Paper Clip Protest: A Small Symbol with a Powerful Message

Sometimes, the simplest things carry the strongest meaning.

In September 2024, writer E. Jean Carroll sparked what has now become known as the Paper Clip Protest. “Comely Reader! I suggest we all start wearing the paper clip,” she wrote. “Subtler than a red hat, more powerful as a CONNECTION.” Her call to action reminded us that the paper clip has long stood for unity, resistance, and courage — and that history was worth repeating.

During World War II, Norwegian teachers and students wore paper clips on their lapels to silently protest Nazi occupation. It was a symbol of solidarity — binding people together just as paper clips bind papers. A quiet act of defiance that said: we are united, and we will not bow to tyranny.

Fast forward to today, and the meaning feels just as vital.

Joyce Vance shared how, when she logged on to tape the #SistersInLaw podcast, her co-host Jill Wine-Banks was wearing a paper clip delicately fastened to her collar. In that moment, Joyce knew E. Jean was right — the quiet symbol of solidarity was genius. Subtle, yet unmistakable. A simple clip that speaks volumes.

You probably have a paper clip within reach — in your desk, your drawer, your pocket. When you wear it, you’re sending a message:  “I see what’s happening. I care. And I will not be silent.”

The paper clip stands for unity, courage, and connection. It’s a reminder that small efforts can bear big fruit when we all take part. Whether you wear yours on a jacket, hat, or bag, you’re showing that we’re in this together — standing firm against division and for democracy.

So before you head out — maybe to the farmers’ market, the grocery store, or just down the street — grab a paper clip. Attach it proudly. Let it be your quiet act of resistance and your loud symbol of hope.

Wear your clip. Take your stand. Stay united.

PS. Yes, I am pissed off. I grow more and more pissed off every day.

Are you?

Do NOT turn to violence!
Do NOT rebel in violence!
DO USE YOUR VOICE!
