Sometimes the best thing you can do for an animal is recognize that you are not the right home for them to reach their full potential. We’ve moved many fabulous animals over the years after coming to just such a conclusion, this time we were on the receiving end when a good friend recognized that despite her best efforts, her winter barn and feeding program was not a good fit for Kaptain. Originally planned to be a couple month foster home, Kaptain instantly thrived as a black-and-tan-brother-from-another-mother with same age Qamar. A son of the lovely, productive Emmaray, a grandson of Hannah, we certainly didn’t mind looking out at this long, level handsome buck and when he was still hanging out with us in fall 2019 we worked with his original owner to put him to use. A huge note of gratitude to our longtime friend up north Judi Hoy at Lucky*Star for breeding such a superb animal, it is a great deal of fun to bring in these genetics.

We’re very happy with the Kaptain kids we’ve seen so far, they tend to bring both strength and flatness of bone and wide eschuteons. As kids, they’ve picked up numerous dry legs and multiple Best in Show awards. As first freshening milkers they are coming in with super well attached mammaries from coast to coast. Admittedly we are still waiting to see the production potential come through in all of his daughters, but the general appearance and attachment improvements alone are exciting and very worth some more freshenings.

With a barn full of Kaptain kids and a yearling son from Encore, we are making the best thing we can do choice to help Kaptain find his next right home where he can continue to make an impact on the breed.
