    Markets and Crias

Where has the time gone since my last update? It has been busy as usual around here. This winter was much colder than last year but not as much snow. With the constant freezing temperatures our pipes in the girl's barn froze in February and remained that way until mid April! Carolyn completed the Certified Classer course and received her certificate at the Alpaca Ontario Annual Meeting. What does this mean to our customers? It means that our fibre will be better classed, graded and prepared before being sent to the mill for processing, which means our finished yarns will be very high quality. May was a busy month with us shearing our own herd of 60 alpacas, plus shearing 84 alpacas for other farms in Grey Highlands. Its always amazing how skinny the alpacas look afterwards. Cria season has arrived, to date we have three females - Kit Kat, Gum Drop, Toffee, and three males - Reflection's Amirror, Black Ball, Mars was born yesterday, he is a perfect silver grey male, we have great hopes for his future. We are expecting another 10 crias between now and early August. As an alpaca farmer this is the best time of year and the worst. It is so great watching the little ones first wobbly steps when they are only a few hours old, watching them chase each other around the pastures and the poor moms trying to keep up with them. The worst part is the waiting for the next arrival, so far this season most of our females have been overdue. We are in full swing for the summer markets now, come join us at a market near you. We have a lot of wonderful new hand knit items and we still bring two adorable alpacas everywhere we go. Thursday's 5:30 until 9:00 we are at the Stayner's Station Park for "Music, Market and Park It". This is a great way to spend Thursday evening, a different group every week providing live entertainment in the band shell, the Farmer's Market takes up half of the parking lot, the other half of the parking lot has a variety of classic cars and tractors on display. Saturdays 8:30 until 1:00 we are at the Collingwood Downtown Farmer's Market. This is the largest market we attend, with over 60 vendors there is something for everyone. The first Sunday of each month, 11:00 until 2:00 we are at the new Thornbury Farmer's Market, right on Hwy. 26 by the municipal office. The third Friday of each month, 3:00 until 7:00 we return to the Meaford Farmer's Market right at the harbour - a great place to be on a hot summer day. We may do a few other events in between, the best way to keep up to date with everything happening at the farm and for markets is to like our facebook page, it is updated at least once a week. Have a pronking day! Carolyn & Doug
