This is one for the Books!
And would you even believe this could happen?
The sweetest family of two children and their parents came for a ranch experience this week. They had a wonderful time feeding the alpacas, and the everyone got carrot "kisses" from the alpacas. The dogs were friendly. and everyone was enjoyed themselves.
After spending time with the alpacas, the next item on the agenda was gathering eggs. I love having ready for the younger children during Spring Break (and for Platinum ranch visitors). Most children (and adults) have never ever gathered eggs or had the experience of holding hens, and it's such a fun learning experience.
Each girl had a wicker basket to gather their eggs. Our hens don't layt their eggs in the hen house. They like to lay them under the hayt tarps. As we lifted up the tarps on the hay stacks, they began gathering up fresh eggs and also a colored plastic egg filled with a "goodie" of their own.
One girl, Goldie Haun, was under the tarp. No problem. I picked her up so she could be held by the girls, which they wanted to do.
Little did we know .....
We walked over to the sitting area where the two sisters were ready to hold her.
Goldie Haun was extremely talkative ... more than her usual gabby self.
I wasn't picking up on her cues.
As I put Goldie Haun into one of the sisters hands ...
PLOP!
Out came her egg!!!!!
Onto the ground, and
IT BROKE OPEN on the ground!
This happened so fast, nothing was captured on camera.
Goldie Haun was released and she immediately started eating (with pure joy) the fresh, warm, golden yolk from the egg she had just layed.
Protein made, protein eaten.
Lesson learned.
We all laughed and I learned a lesson.
READ YOUR ENVIRONMENT A LITTLE BETTER.
(I will work on this.)
No chickens or humans were hurt; just a little egg was recycled.
