"Like seven inches from the midday sun" (Carlos Santana, "Smooth")

Northern Michigan is NOT supposed to have day after day of high 80's and 90 degrees with skin slick from humidity. The herd is feeling the heat also. They are expert at squeezing into the areas of shade and moving when it does. Eventually, the smart girls will go in the barn and lay in front of the fans. Even the new crias are not running around as much, which must be very hard for them. :)

Snowmass Royal Gold White Chocolate

Snowmass Royal Gold White Chocolate

It looks like twins out in the pasture running around and I am thankful that their moms know who they are because I would not at this point. Two little boys, both white born on June 26th and June 29th. They are only a pound different in weight. Oh so adorable they are! We are blessed.
They join Northern Blessings Royal Moon who was born on May 7th. There is not much better entertainment than watching the cria's running around the pasture playing chase and annoying their moms and siblings. read more...

Shearing day

All the pretty colors

All the pretty colors

Today we sheared 15 alpacas. Always an adventure! I'll spare you the description of the 7 or 8 full-on frontal spits from Sno (Snodrift) as we took her down for shearing. Once down she was fine, but she is big girl who knows her own mind. By the end of the day we had a very nice array of alpaca colors all ready to be skirted , sorted, and sent off to the mill, the hand spinners, and the co-op. I will also keep some for my own feeble attempts at fleece hand processing. Practice makes perfect, rig read more...
