Nestled in the open pastures and rolling hills of Melville, Montana, just north of Big Timber, Open Spear Ranch is where the spirit of the American West lives on. Our American Quarter Horses are born and raised on thousands of acres of wide-open country — a land of green fields, rocky ridges, and clear mountain streams.
Here, our mares are pasture-bred in May and June and foal naturally in the open. From their very first steps, our foals learn to navigate the rugged Montana terrain — crossing streams, climbing hills, and developing the sure-footedness, intelligence, and grit that make them true working partners. This natural upbringing builds strong bones, sound feet, and steady minds.
Alongside our horse program, we also run commercial Angus and Hereford cross cattle, allowing our young horses to grow up accustomed to cattle work from day one — an invaluable start for future ranch and performance horses.
