Description

Dear, dear Cinnabar. I bought him for a tiny price when one of our first two free alpacas was sick and I was afraid he would pass away, leaving us with one lone alpaca. Little I did I know that Cinnabar would end up being the most perfect alpaca ever.

It turned out that he was absolutely ideal for Gavin to start using and showing as just a little kid! Completely bombproof, Cinnabar was completely willing to do anything. Nothing scared him. Gavin used him as a Clover in 4-H, and Cinnabar just worked his heart out.

We took off to our first AOA show not knowing much at all. I’ll never forget when Wade Gease asked during the performance classes what we did with his (absolutely terrible) fiber how Gavin said proudly, “Dryer balls!” and the whole audience laughed. But Cinnabar paid for the alpacas’ hay that year with only dryer balls; we only had a few alpacas at that point. The whole audience applauded when they heard how old Cinnabar was. Most alpacas at an AOA show are fairly young. Cinnabar was in his double digits and older than Gavin!

They had a fantastic season. Gavin went from last in his class to first, as he realized what he needed to do and started paying attention, and Cinnabar was there supporting him every step of the way.

We retired Cinnabar the next year when jumps started becoming difficult for him, even with NSAIDS and joint supplements on board.

Cinnabar lives in a retirement pasture with an even older alpaca in perfect harmony, living the life, and we just enjoy his sweet face. His fiber is still made into dryer balls, although I did 2 rounds of rug yarn too.
