Rocking Grandmas, Grandpas, Aunties, and Uncles – Baby Watch 2026!
We are excited to open Adult-Only Volunteer Opportunities for anyone who would love to spend peaceful hours at the farm watching for incoming cria (alpaca babies). We anticipate births during the last two weeks of May, August, and September, and summer is our busiest season with guests.
With so much interest in helping, we are offering a simple but meaningful way to be part of these special moments.
This experience is exactly what it sounds like: Come out, sit comfortably, and watch for signs of labor among our alpaca moms who are due within the listed windows above. It is peaceful, it is quiet, and for many people—especially the medically inclined, farmers, or anyone not squeamish—it is fascinating.
Did you know when a female alpaca goes into labor it is called "Unpacking"!
You can:
• Bring your water, pop, tea (and yes, we will refill them as much as you need). Bring some snacks or lunch too.
• Bring a good book, your phone, or anything that helps pass the time.
• Find a cozy spot—like our rocking chair—and simply observe the expectant alpaca girls. We will teach you the signs to look for, and if you notice anything, you simply come get us.
Like humans, alpacas do most of the work themselves, though sometimes we assist.
If you are lucky enough to witness a birth, you may:
• Record it
• Take all the photos you wish
• Learn everything you want to know about caring for these wobbly-legged, precious cria.
Once the cria is born, we continue monitoring for the next four weeks (especially during hot weather), so babysitter-style help is still appreciated.
If you are interested, just sign up. Kathy (Mrs. YaYa) will help coordinate your time slots. Book your initial two-hour slots. Want to do more then you can book more OR call Kathy and she will do the bookings.
If you have questions, call: Kathy – 816-255-8146.
Important Rules and Notes:
• This is an Adults Only experience. No exceptions.
• Patience is essential. Moms give birth when they choose—sometimes right before or after you leave.
• Births typically occur between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., so those are our volunteer hours.
• You may stay for one hour or the whole day—whatever works for you.
• Wear comfortable, appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes.
If you want a meaningful way to spend peaceful time on the farm—and maybe witness something extraordinary—this opportunity is for you.
For the medically inclined folks, Mrs YaYa most of her life was a paramedic and worked in the ER. Caring for the wonderful Alpacas has been a huge learning curve but that medical knowledge does help. If you want more hands on during a delivery let us know and we will have you help us out more if needed.
After a cria arrives, we continue monitoring for the next four weeks (especially during hot weather), so babysitter-style help is still appreciated. If you are interested, just sign up. Kathy (Mrs. YaYa) will help coordinate your time slots. Book your initial two-hour time, and she will help extend it based on your interest and availability.
